Table Top Gaming Sound Effects

For some time now I have been trying to get sound effects on my gaming board to add another layer of detail. A while back I experimented with the little sound chips that come in gift cards, but once the battery runs down and you have to change it (quite tricky ) you lose the sound effect on the chip and have to upload it again.

Although small, the sound chip and speaker aren’t really small enough to install in smaller scale models….so after some minor success, I ditched the idea.

I found that model railway enthusiasts have fairly sophisticated devices to allow them to have train sounds on their layouts. Which is fairly clever, but these devices are quite expensive.  This is quite a neglected area for model makers, as it is quite unusual to find sound effects used on gaming boards….and i don’t know of any that are directed to that corner of the hobby.

Whilst searching on Ebay in the UK I found several sound effects machines built with railway layouts in mind, however, it was possible to remove all the train sound effects and add your own MP3 sounds via a USB connection.  Luckily my device was able to produce 20 different sound effects of varying length….mainly around 30 seconds each, but some shorter and some longer,   The machines are made by a guy called Peter, he has varying types available, with a range of capabilites and you can find his stock here Link

It is also possible to have a custom machine made, to meet your specific needs.

please email him with any questions you might have. I can certainly recommend him, well worth a look if you want to add some sound to you game or models.

I was able to find all the sounds I needed and tape them from the internet using a free piece of software called “audacity” Using this you can then edit the sound and convert it to an MP3 file and upload it onto your sound card.

I have marked all my buttons to easily find the sound effect I need! i will also wire in some additional speakers and place them inside some buildings at a later date, but the device tself does have internal speakers, which are very effective.

Anyway, really happy with the results, so I thought I’d share in the hope it might be useful for others.
