ModelMates Weathering Sprays “RUSTY RED”

rusty red 2B

When I come across something that is really good I like to share it with you!

So, a while back I was working on two SPV body shells that I was going to use as Knocked out Hulks. (having been hit by Daleks beam weapons.)

I used the rock salt method…..and was pretty pleased with the results but it still lacked a bit of something.

There was can of Modelmates Rusty Red weathering spray in my local hobby store, (sadly the shop doesn’t have much of a range of these excellent products).. I’d heard of these sprays a while back and always wanted to give it a try so, (modelmates have quite a big range of items on offer)  I bought one and took it home.

My SPV’s would make a good test….

I would recommend doing all your normally painting, highlighting etc first. …and as the spray works best on a lighter colour base coat.

The spray is dye rather than paint and water soluble. The idea being you spray then wipe with a cloth to get desired results…I did this at first but it wasn’t very detailed.

So I waited for it to dry, then wet a cotten bud with water and played around with the dye until i was happy…mostly thining down concerntrations and removing from it the blue metal paint!

Very happy with results, it has massively enhanced the burned up rusted feel. The pictures don’t really do it justice. I’m looking forward to getting some of the other colours, but i would certainly recommend you give these a try on buildings or vehicles. They are easy to use and the effects are amazing.

Spectrum Pursuit Vehicles (S.P.V.)

One of the most Iconic vehicles of all Gerry Andersons series, The Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle or S.P.V.

Finally managed to complete them, added some mesh grills to the air intakes, these areas needed a bit of work as the original Imai kit had missile launches here!!!!!!!!!!

One one of the vehicles I opened up the little cannon flap on front…and added a gun barrel and a Pyrotechnic muzzle blast from Armorcast

Decals/transfers are by the excellent Jbot  The gold S of the spectrum logo is stunning, compared to the orange Brown of the Imai kit decals. Worth every penny if you are going to make this kit.

I have included a 28mm crooked dice miniture for scale in one of the shots.

Captain Scarlet by Sevens models

Way back in the 90’s my wife bought me this model for a christmas present. it was pre ordered from the the now sadly defunct Comet Miniatures.

I believe he is 1/12th scale.

It had been in storage for some time and had taken a bit of damage but whilst i was painting the the smaller 28mm version I decided to restore him!

He now stands above my painting desk.

Captain Scarlet and SPC

I realised that I painted this much earlier in the year and sold it on ebay to raise some funds.

The car is the old Dinky model which I restored from a very poor state, I had to buy some spare bits, but the finished result was a massive improvement.

The figure is 28mm from Crooked Dice and is from the TLS range.

I made the tiny decals for Captian Scarlet’s hat and sleeves.

Humbrol Metal Cote Paint and an M.S.V. Respray!

I managed to pickup a can of of the above paint in a polished steel colour (probably better to call it brushed steel!)

I didn’t want the surface of the Maximum Security Vehicle (MSV) to be quite as shiny and reflective as a mirror…like say a P51 Mustang or Sabre jet fighter which is shiny aluminium.

The dulled metal effect was all i needed.

I repainted the MSV as i wasn’t entirely happy with the original paint job, (which was a silver carpaint over primer paint….and a black wash on top.)

The Paint

really strange going on, it has more in common with a fire extinguisher…the dry powder one for electrical fires!…it seems to go on very dry…and then quickly dries to a powdery black sooty effect.

I waited the recommended 30 minutes, took it inside, and buffed with cloth for around 20 mintes until i was happy with it.

One of the main advantages is that if there are any gaps/cracks/detail in the surface the paint stays black within it…so it does your weathering for you…no need for a black wash!

As i buffed the steel colour came through and a very dull shine began to appear…like I said i didn’t want the surface mirror effect!

Much more even colour than a normal can of spray metallic paint, even if the photo’s don’t do it justice, it is a massive improvement over what I had before. I can’t wait to use the polished Aluminium version on a suitable fighter aircraft kit!!!

So i don’t want to come across as some sort of poster boy for humbrol, but this paint is impressive, and I would recommend that you have a go with it. Be very careful the can actually says that it is “Metal Cote” and not just an ordinary can of metallic silver paint!!!

It was difficult to track down having been to several places to get it, but certainly worth the time and trouble to search out.

Spectrum Jet Bike

Although in the TV series I don’t ever recall seeing a Jet bike, but I had to have one.

Kit bashed the rider, and painted him as Capt. Ochre.

I call it a Spectrum Scout Bike, or S.S.B

Spectrum Helijet WIP/update

Started this Iami kit a couple of years ago, but didn’t get round to completing it..until today!!!! Well, it does need a little bit of a touch up around where i glued it all together so don’t look to closely!!!!! there is some Green stuff drying around the exhausts. Once I have finished painting it i will take some photo’s.

pilots are 28mm scale and were kit bashed heads from here Bodies from here

Decals from J Bot here

Base and telescopic/pivoting stand from Corsec Engineering  But will need adapting as helijet is way over the weight limit for the magnetic ball bearing.

the original kits nose was way off what it should have been so I redesigned it with Green stuff, also upgraded the weapon system from M.G. to Partical beam weapon!…well it will be used to hunt Daleks!!!!

Anyway here are the updated pictures.
